On June 3rd at 12:20 am my first nephew was born. His name is G. Wyatt Stinchfield. My brother Grant and his wife Amy have a 3 year-old yellow lab named Bella. The day of Wyatt arrival home from the hospital my brother posted a you-tube video of Amy sitting down holding Wyatt giggling as Bella whirled around them trying to jump up on her lap to give Wyatt kisses. I have seen new mothers before with their babies terrified that their dog would scratch, hurt, or give their dog germs. But Amy and Grant giggled and remained confident that Bella would learn quickly that her new brother was fragile. As days and weeks go by pictures are sent via email of infant Wyatt lying on Bella’s belly and Bella gently kissing Wyatt’s face. They joke that Sister Bella babysits as they run out of the room for a moment. My brother and sister in law are smart alert people. If there was an ounce of reason to worry about Bella’s behavior around Wyatt they would immediately pick it up. Bella has been the perfect dog.

Here I will ask Bella, “What did you first think of Baby Wyatt and what do you think of him now?”

BELLA: “When I first saw Wyatt I thought this is what they had been telling me about and this is why mom has been gone. I wanted Wyatt to look at me and acknowledge me but he just sat there. I danced around them trying to get him to open his eyes but he remained the same. I wondered if he would ever move. It was not until later on that night that I realized that he was like I was when I was a puppy. I figured it out when I watched him breath. It reminded me of when I was little and use to cuddle up with my sisters and brothers. That is when I realized that it is best to be real still when he is close so that he can sleep comfortable on another breathing body. He moves around more now and he smiles at me. It took a few weeks for him to start recognizing me, but he does now. He is really smart. My mom and dad are still my good friends. I was told by another dog that when your people have a baby that you get ignored, but I am not ignored at all. They still love me and talk to me and take me out. I can’t wait for Wyatt to get a little older because I want to show him all the neat places in the yard and I want to tell him that when he learns to walk he can lean on me. I also want him to know that I will always keep him safe and I will try my hardest to be there if he ever falls. I also want him to know that I will be very careful of the stroller so that he doesn’t get knocked around. I know he is really fragile now, but my dad thinks he will be tough one day. So I can’t wait for the day he can play with me at the dog park. Everyday, Wyatt starts to understand new things. I think he is starting to recognize that there are different colors in the world and he is starting to recognize things by their smell. He doesn’t smell like I do though. He can grab onto things too now. I am so lucky to have him. My mom and dad picked a great baby.”

My life pretty much revolves around animals. I wake up to a cat kneading my head and venture out at a dawn to take the dogs for their daily morning walk. Then I head off to work to talk to the world’s pet all day. I come home to taking the dogs for a swim, letting the bunny out into the yard, brushing the cats and then more work. When I was a child my grandfather had built a small sailboat. Sailing with the wind and the waves was my only true passion outside being at the stables. So now when I want to get away from who I am or what I do I head to the ocean. In 2002, I met Shawn my ex-husband. He gave me my first surfboard and surfing lessons in exchange for training his dog. Shawn taught me many lessons in life, but surfing was by far the most fun and the most healing. During one dawn surf session I caught a beautiful long rolling wave at the Ventura Point. I stood up, dropped in and to my surprise there were three dolphins, two on my right and one on my left, surfing the same wave. I took a deep breath in awe and looked up to see a full rainbow over the Ventura Pier. It was the closet I have come to heaven on earth. Over the years dolphins have caught waves beside me and have swum under and around my board and I. I have never feared them. I have only a sense of gratitude for their presence. A few weeks ago, a pod of dolphins were swimming around the surfers and I thought I would challenge myself to make friends with them. People swim with the dolphins all over the world. What is different about Ventura & Santa Barbara County? I started to send them telepathic messages telling them how much joy they bring people. How a sight of a dolphin makes people feel blessed whether they are swimming in the water or walking on shore. I told them how people around the world swim with the dolphins and how people have trinkets of them in their homes. This pod of four dolphins stayed around us the whole time we were surfing. When our backs were turned one dolphin would sneak up to us. We would turn around to find the dolphin slowly swimming off. The dolphins asked me about dogs and what they were all about. They asked me about cars and umbrellas. I told them I would call them the next time I came to the ocean. That night I dreamt of hundreds of them in the darkness of the night floating sleepily amongst the seaweeds.
The next week I called them. They came but I had already gotten out of the water due to the coldness. From the shore, I explained to them about body temperature and why people wear wetsuits. They thanked me for the knowledge and told me to come again. A few days later, I was dog training at a different beach and I swear the same pod came to see me. They played close to the beach; jumping out of the water twisting and wiggling. People stood in awe. “I have never seen dolphins so close to shore!” They exclaimed. I had feelings of grandiosity that some how they sensed my presence. That somehow an invisible string of energy connects us and they had come to this beach, miles from were I first saw them, to ask me questions and show that they too want to be friends.
That night when I closed my eyes I heard them echoing their songs and felt the ocean water rushing by my body as if I was one of them. I reminded myself that I am my greatest skeptic, but I am also my biggest believer. These past few weeks I have learned that I can no longer leave a part of me behind when I enter the ocean. I have begun to bring who I am and my work into the waters with me. Whether I fully believe it or not, I am making friends with the dolphins.

Rusty is a rescue dog. He used to be a biter. Now his people do lots of training and take him to herd sheep & cattle. Rusty is very careful about his biting now.

These are their person's notes on our session:

QUESTIONS FOR BEEMER:

(BEEMER WAS AFRAID THAT LAURA WAS GOING TO BITE PART OF HIS BRAIN OUT WHEN SHE TOLD HIM SHE COULD HEAR HIM. SHE TOLD HIM NO, AND HE WAS OK AFTER THAT)

DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR LEG AND THE SURGERY?

(LAURA EXPLAINED THAT HE TORE HIS LIGAMENT AND THAT THEY SEWED IT BACK TOGETHER AND HE NEEDS TO STAY IN THE PEN FOR 3 MORE WEEKS. AFTER THAT HE WILL GO BACK TO THE DR. AND THEY WILL GIVE HIM MORE EXERCISES TO DO LIKE THE WATER TREADMILL. BUT, HE DOESN’T HAVE TO DO THAT IF HE DOESN’T LIKE IT)
YES, BUT WILL I EVER BE ABLE TO PLAY BALL AGAIN? (SHE TOLD HIM YES, BUT HE CAN’T RUN AS FAST AND CRAZY AS BEFORE BUT HE’LL BE ABLE TO PLAY AGAIN)
ARE YOU IN ANY PAIN?
SOMETIMES, BUT IT’S MORE ANNOYING THAN PAINFUL. IT FEELS WEAK AND LIKE IT’S BURNING WHEN I STEP ON IT. I HATE NOT HAVING POWER MUSCLES.
IS THERE SOMETHING YOU WANT US TO DO FOR YOU THAT WE AREN’T DOING NOW?
I WANT TO GO BACK TO THE PARK WITH THE TREES WITH THE PINECONES
I WANT MORE REIKI MASSAGES FROM AUNT ALICE, MORE WALKS, MORE CAR RIDES AND TREATS. I LIKE THOSE TREATS YOU MAKE THAT ARE IN THE DIFFERENT SHAPES, ESPECIALLY THE ONES THAT LOOK LIKE CRACKERS.
I NEED TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE MORE!

Cobi

Beemer

I’D LIKE TO HAVE MUSIC. SOFT, LOW MUSIC BUT MIX IT UP SOME SO I DON’T GET BORED.
IS THERE ANYTHING THAT SCARES OR FRIGHTENS YOU?
MY BIGGEST FEAR IS THAT MY LEG WON’T GET BETTER
I DON’T LIKE HIGH PITCHED NOISES LIKE SMOKE DETECTORS OR KIDS SCREAMING.
PILLS TASTE BAD, THEY MAKE MY EYES DRY AND ROLL BACK. PLEASE ASK THE DR. NOT TO PINCH MY KNEE.
SOMETIMES IT SOUNDS LIKE PEOPLE ARE IN THE HOUSE BUT THEY AREN’T (ANSWERING MACHINE WENT OFF DURING THE READING) IT’S ANNYOING TO HEAR PEOPLE WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO SMELL THEM.
WHY DON’T YOU LIKE TO BE WASHED OR BRUSHED?
I HATE TO BE CLEAN. IF I’M DIRTY I FEEL LIKE I’VE WORKED. (COBI CHIMED IN AND SAID THAT’S RIDICULOUS, SHE WORKS AND STAYS CLEAN). I LIKE TO FEEL LIKE I’VE BEEN IN THE WOODS.
WHY DO YOU LIKE TO BARK AT THE FENCE?
BECAUSE I’M DOING MY JOB AND I NEED TO LET EVERYONE KNOW I’M HERE AND GUARDING THE FAMILY. (LAURA ASKED HIM TO PLEASE TAKE IT DOWN A NOTCH). BUT, I DON’T JUMP AT THE FENCE LIKE I USED TO! (LAURA SAYS HE TAKES HIS JOB VERY SERIOUSLY)

WHY ARE MY FLOWERS ALWAYS TRAMPLED NEXT TO THE JASMINE ALONG THE FENCE BETWEEN OUR HOUSE AND JOHN’S?
I JUST LIKE TO LOOK THRU THE FENCE AT JACK AND THE KIDS. (COBI ADDED, SOMETIMES I ALSO LOOK THRU THE FENCE- AND SOMETIMES I BARK)
WHY DO YOU BARK AT FILIPE (THE GARDENER)?
HE HAS TOOLS THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS TO A DOG OR A HUMAN. ANYONE IN THE YARD SHOULD KNOW I’M WATCHING THEM. COBI ADDED, I LIKE HIM. HE GIVES ME JERKY AND PETS ME BUT HE DOESN’T TOUCH BEEMER MUCH. THEN BEEMER SAID I’M THE PROPERTY CARETAKER.
DO BEES SCARE YOU?
I DON’T LIKE THEM. ONE TIME I GOT STUNG BAD. BUT I DON’T LIKE TO TALK ABOUT BAD THINGS.
COBI SAID SHE DOESN’T MIND THEM. SHE CATCHES THEM AND SUCKS OUT THEIR STINGERS SO THEY CAN’T HURT ANYONE.
DO YOU LIKE WHEN COBI LICKS YOU?
I LOVE WHEN COBI LICKS ME. SOMETIMES I ACT ANNOYED, BUT I REALLY LIKE IT A LOT.
QUESTIONS FOR COBI
DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON WITH BEEMER?
BEEMER HURT HIS LEG. WE’LL BE IN THIS PEN FOREVER. HE’LL NEVER WALK THE SAME AGAIN. (LAURA TOLD HER THAT IS NOT TRUE. THEY NEED TO STAY IN THE PEN FOR 3 MORE WEEKS AND HE’LL BE FINE)
WHEN YOU HAVE A SEIZURE CAN YOU SEE OR HEAR US?
I DON’T KNOW WHY I GET THEM, BUT IT’S THE WORST FEELING EVER. I GET JITTERY AT FIRST AND CAN FEEL IT COMING ON AND THEN MY TEETH CHATTER AND I LOSE LAPSES OF TIME. WHEN I WAKE UP I HAVE AN EXCRUTIATING HEADACHE.
WHY DO YOU LIKE TO LICK PEOPLE, BEEMER, YOURSELF?
I LIKE CLEANING, CLEAN IS NICE. I HATE TO BE DIRTY AND I WANT EVERYONE TO BE CLEAN. (SHE’S LICKING HER PAWS AS SHE IS TALKING) THIS IS CLEANING.
DO YOU LIKE IT WHEN WE SHAVE OFF YOUR HAIR?
I LOVE IT. I HATE TO BE DIRTY. I WOULD LIKE FOR YOU TO TAKE A DAMP CLOTH AND WIPE ME DOWN EVERY DAY.
IS THERE SOMETHING YOU WANT US TO DO FOR YOU THAT WE AREN’T DOING NOW?
I WANT MY OWN COUCH BY THE TV, A LITTLE ONE THAT IS UP HIGH FOR DOGS.
I WANT TO PLAY FRISBEE LIKE WE USED TO.
I NEED A MUCH LONGER WALK THAN I’VE BEEN GETTING SINCE BEEMER GOT HURT.
I’D LIKE A MASSAGE EVERY OTHER DAY, MY BODY GETS SORE. MAYBE IT SHOULD BE FROM A PROFESSIONAL WHO HAS SPECIAL TOOLS.
I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY MOM CAN’T HEAR US LIKE YOU CAN. I’M NOT DOING ANYTHING DIFFERENT AND YOU CAN HEAR ME.
I WANT TO GO TO THE BEACH.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE GO TO VISIT THE OLD PEOPLE. (THEY ARE THERAPY DOGS)
DAD SHOULD WALK WITH US MORE. IT WOULD BE GOOD FOR HIM TO BREATHE MORE FRESH AIR.
MOM COOKS US FOOD WITH SPECIAL MEAT AND I WANT MORE!
I LIKE WHEN MOM SINGS WITH HER FRIENDS AND TAPS HER FEET???
MAYBE YOU (LAURA) COULD INVITE ME TO YOUR DOG’S BIRTHDAY PARTY! (LAURA’S DOG IS, IN FACT, WANTING TO HAVE A BIRTHDAY PARTY!)
IS THERE ANYTHING THAT SCARES OR FRIGHTENS YOU?
ONE TIME THERE WAS A CAT ON THE FENCE AND IT FELL OFF. I WAS SCARED FOR IT AND WORRIED.
THERE IS A MAN IN DARK CLOTHES IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD WITH LONG ARMS THAT WALKS BY THE HOUSE. HE CREEPS ME OUT. (I ASKED IF IT’S THE GUY THAT USED TO LIVE ACROSS THE STREET)- YES
I DON’T LIKE WHEN WIND BLOWS THINGS OVER OR AGAINST THE FENCE AND MAKES NOISES.
OH, AND I GET UPSET WHEN I CAN’T GET MY TOY FROM UNDER THE COUCH OR CHAIR.
DO YOU LIKE TO WATCH TV?
I LOVE TV!
QUESTIONS FOR BOTH
CAN YOU COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER?
BEEMER SAYS HE TALKS TO COBI ALL THE TIME ABOUT THINGS THAT HAPPENED BEFORE SHE WAS BORN. (LAURA ASKED HOW HE CAN DO THAT SINCE COBI IS OLDER) HE SAYS HE’S LIVED MORE LIFETIMES THAN COBI HAS. COBI SAYS, I DON’T KNOW ABOUT THAT LIFETIME STUFF, BUT I’M GOING TO TALK TO HIM MORE ABOUT WHAT WE NEED TO TELL MOM AND DAD!
DO YOU EVER SEE KATIE & ZEKE (DEARLY DEPARTED FORMER PETS)?
COBI-NOT SO MUCH ANY MORE. WHEN BEEMER FIRST HURT HIMSELF THEY WOULD COME AND PLAY TO ENTERTAIN US.
BEEMER- WHEN I WAS REALLY FEELING BAD THEY CAME TO SEE ME AND I THOUGHT IT WAS MY TIME TO GO TO BE WITH THEM, BUT THEY TOLD ME IT WASN’T AND THAT I WOULD BE OK.
DO YOU LIKE BEING THERAPY DOGS?
COBI LOVES THE OLD PEOPLE, BUT BEEMER WOULD RATHER BE ABLE TO PLAY WITH PEOPLE.
(LAURA SAYS SHE NEEDS TO LEAVE AND I ASK HER TO ASK ONE MORE QUESTION ABOUT THE DOGSITTER)

DO YOU LIKE HAVING JAN STAY WITH YOU WHEN WE GO AWAY AND CAN’T TAKE YOU?
COBI SAYS WE LOVE TO HAVE JAN STAY WITH US, BUT I KNOW THERE IS ANOTHER QUESTION ON THAT SHEET ABOUT CAMPING. I KNOW MOM PUT IT ON THERE AND I DIDN’T KNOW WHY SHE WAS THINKING ABOUT IT. NOW I KNOW WHY, SO WE NEED TO GET TO THAT QUESTION.
BEEMER SAYS JAN DRINKS A LOT OF WATER!
WOULD YOU RATHER GO CAMPING OR STAY IN A HOTEL?
COBI SAYS I WANT TO GO CAMPING VERY SOON. WE NEED TO GO CAMPING.
BEEMER SAYS HE LOVES CAMPING, BUT SOMETIMES HE LIKES THE HOTEL TOO.
