What is it like being a Pit Bull?

"I truly like being a pit bull, but not always. When I was in the shelter, I heard someone saying that all dogs like me will bite. I would never bite. They also say that shelters put us to death more than any other breed. I don’t know if that is true but that scared me.

I like my body because I feel strong even when I am shy inside."

A few years ago, Journey's people called me because she was no longer going outside into the yard. Journey explains why, "One morning, I went outside and a saw a large wild cat as big as me. He was eating one of the squirrels that would come to the bird feeder. It was a terrible sight because there was blood everywhere. I couldn't move and the cat scared me with an evil eye. I was worried he would get me next."

After Greta rode the escalator as Nordstroms, I told her that she could tell Gita (her sister German Shepherd) about it when she got home. Greta replied, "I could tell Gita about it, but she wouldn't believe me."

Isis is now in heaven. Before she passed she talked about her person's eyes, "I love my mom's eyes. They are beautiful. They remind me of grasshoppers."

This is Cleo. Over the years, she became my very good friend. A friend, I miss dearly. The first time I met her, she said this about her and her brother, "Laura, we don't need you. Randy and I can communicate to our people just fine. You can go now."

Max says, "Tell mom I am sorry. I wish she would touch me softly. Biting it is the only way to get my point across to tell her to watch my pain level on my body. I guess I can try to hiss. If I bite again, I will try not to bite so hard. I didn’t like how it hurt my mom so bad. When she would look in the mirror she was so sad and I was so sad too. I don’t ever want my mom to look in the mirror and be upset with me again. It is a terrible feeling. I like it when she sees me in the mirror and tells me how handsome I am."

Gita would bark and lunge at other dogs. She would look very vicious. One day, she graduated to being off leash at the beach. Although she was a bit scared, she played with numerous dogs. After our session, I asked her why she was dog aggressive before. This was her reply, "I didn't know that other dogs would want to play with me. I thought they were going to be mean, so I would try to scare them away."

Bridgett is a five year old Tibetan Spaniel. She is a retired champion show dog who has recently moved to her forever home. This is what she says about her new person, "In the show world everyone poked, prodded and looked at me, but no one ever truly saw me until my mom (her new person). She is the only one who has truly looked into my eyes."

This is my friend's dog, Keesha. She passed away on 8.2.07 at 17 years old. From heaven, this is some of what she wanted to share with her mom (person):
"My mom always saw the best in me. When you have someone in your life that sees the good in you so strongly, it is easier to become happier, more confident and more agreeable."

"Tell her when she is having a hard time and she doesn’t know which way to turn, to sit and ask me and listen. Tell her by the next day, she will know her answer. Tell her answers come slowly. They come like the tides not like a crashing wave."

New perspective gained after dogs taken to psychic

There are things I find it hard to believe in — aliens, psychics and the tooth fairy are a few. First-hand experience has a way of changing your beliefs.

Last month, I took our family's two small dogs, Kobe and Kelsey, both Dachshund/Jack Russell terrier mixes, to meet noted Ojai-based pet psychic Laura Stinchfield.

These are my doggies. Maia on the left and Stormy on the right. For several days now, our town of Ojai, CA. has reached 109 degrees. I was about to leave our house for a few hours when Storm stopped me and said, "Mom, can you teach me how to turn on the AC (window unit)? I'll bet this is how dogs feel when they are left in the car on a hot day."

This is Laddie with his person Marina. During our session, Laddie expressed, "I would like Marina to spend more time talking to me. Can she be the one to give me baths?" Since the session, Marina and Laddie have been more comfortable together and Laddie and all his people seem to be having more fun.

Micah is a very special Mustang. He is involved in a program called Extreme Mustang Makeover with his trainer Kathe Smothers.

Kathe was having problems getting him to do lateral movements. When I asked him about it he said, "She's asking one side of my body to speed up and one side of my body to slow down and she just doesn't understand that that is physically impossible."

When I asked Micah what he thought of Kathe he said, "Naaa I don't like her at all, of course I like her, she gave me my life."

Teagan and Daisy live together. Teagen is on the left and Daisy on the right.

Daisy says, "My sister (human) should look into the mirror more to see how beautiful she is. It will make her feel better about herself."

Teagan says, "Everyday Daisy makes me look at her and tell her how beautiful she is. Then she looks at me and tells me how beautiful I am."
